Automatic Number Plate Recognition, or ANPR, is a technology that uses
a camera to interpret and extract textual information from vehicle
number/license plates. It further transfers the information to the computer
processor in the ANPR-based application, which generates a database for

In April 2021, the City of York
Council made two main city center car parks ticketless. The ticketless system
will use ANPR cameras to provide ticketless parking. It will let visitors pay
for their parking at their exit, rather than at the entrance. The decision was
made in partnership with York BID. The new ‘pay-on-exit’ system was installed
at the Marygate and Coppergate car parks in York city.
