Report Overview

With a growing range of advanced applications, the global adsorbent market is thriving. Innovations in oil & gas processing and socio-economic advancements, including the increasing use of adsorbents in maintaining purity requirements in numerous applications and environmental concerns, are driving the market's growth.

Global Adsorbents Market- Industry Trends & Forecast Report 2027

The global adsorbents market was worth USD 3.9 billion in 2020 and is further projected to reach USD 5.9 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 6.0 % during the forecast period (2021-2027). The growth of major end-use sectors such as water and air treatment, chemicals, and petrochemicals, mainly in developing economies such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East, is driving the market growth. Increasing environmental worries about the detrimental effects of wastewater have driven governments worldwide to make the usage of adsorbents mandatory, hich in turn is favoring the growth of the adsorbents market worldwide. The United States and Europe have adopted tight regulatory standards to purify water and air.

According to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), the country's chemical sector is growing between 15 and 20% per year and is expected to reach USD 300 billion by 2025. As a result, the chemical industry's demand for adsorbents is likely to grow in the future years. These factors encourage the widespread use of Adsorbents in the building and infrastructure industries.

Global Adsorbents Market Overview

Adsorbents are substances that bind to other substances and absorb them. As a result of adhesion, a coating is formed on the surface of adsorbents. These materials remove specific elements from solids, liquids, and gases, causing them to attach to the surface without changing their physical or chemical properties. These adsorbents are typically used in the form of rods, moldings, monolithic and spherical pallets. Exceptional properties such as heat stability and abrasion resistance make adsorbents a great choice for multiple applications, such as petrochemicals, air separation and drying, and water treatment.

Global Adsorbents Market Trend

Growth Drivers

The Rise in Demand for Oxygen Concentrators is Fueling the Market Growth

An oxygen concentrator is a medical device that concentrates oxygen from ambient air. Approximately 78% of atmospheric air is nitrogen, and 21% is oxygen, with the remaining 1% composed of various gases. An oxygen concentrator takes in this air, filters it through a sieve, releases the nitrogen back into the atmosphere, and concentrates the oxygen left. With the rise of COVID-19 cases and a shortage of oxygen cylinders in numerous Indian states, oxygen concentrators are among the most in-demand oxygen therapy devices, particularly patients in home isolation and hospitals running out of oxygen.

Concentrators are portable and do not require a specific temperature, unlike LMO, which must be stored and carried in cryogenic tankers. Unlike cylinders that must be refilled, concentrators require a power source to pull in ambient air. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is a technique for isolating specific gas species from a mixture of gases under pressure, based on their molecular properties and affinity for an adsorbent material. This has resulted in a growing demand for adsorbents.

Challenges

Depletion of Raw Materials Pose a Serious Threat to the Market

Coal, bauxite, silicate, zeolite, and clay are the most common raw materials utilized in the production of adsorbents. These mineral resources are naturally available. Excessive extraction and mining of these raw materials is not an option for preserving them. Due to the limited supply of mineral resources, exponential growth and increased consumption are unsustainable. As per data revealed by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2020, the United States produced 535 million short tonnes (MMst), a 24% reduction from the 706 MMst mined in 2019 and the lowest amount of coal production in any country year since 1965. There may be a big challenge for the market for adsorbents due to the depletion of mineral resources.

Impact of COVID-19

The novel coronavirus has negatively impacted the global adsorbents market. Because of the nationwide lockdowns and transportation bans, the construction industry faced several challenges, such as lack of material, shortage of labor, and high-cost components of construction projects. Due to these factors, various adsorbents-producing countries had to stop their production, disrupting supply chains. Thus, as a result of these disruptions, the market for adsorbents declined. On the other hand, the adsorbents market also gained traction due to the increase in demand for oxygen concentrators. Since adsorbents assist in filling oxygen concentrators, its demand grew during the pandemic propelling the market growth.

Global Adsorbents Market: By Application

Based on applications, the global adsorbents market is segmented into petroleum refining, gas refining, chemicals/petrochemicals, water treatment, air separation & drying, packaging, and others. Petroleum Refining is likely to be the fastest-growing segment in the global adsorbents market during the forecast period.  Adsorbents are used extensively in the petrochemical industry. Adsorbents are increasingly utilized in the dehydration and purification of ethane/NGL/propane feed. Water, carbon dioxide, methyl alcohol, other oxygenates, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and mercury are all removed from ethylene, propylene, butylene, different solvents, and co-monomers using adsorbents. Thus, the wide application of adsorbents in petroleum refining will create immense opportunities for the market during the forecast period.

Global Adsorbents Market: Regional Insights

Geographically, the global adsorbents market is categorized into North America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East & Africa, and Latin America. Among all the regions, the Asia-Pacific segment held a significant market share in 2020 and is likely to dominate the segment during the forecast period. The region’s growth is attributable to the extensive increase in India and China's imports and exports to meet their energy needs. Energy-related imports and exports by India and China are a major reason for the region's growth. The petrochemical industry in this region is significantly contributing to the market's expansion.
